the Things You Need To Consider Before Picking Out Your Foundation

There are many things to consider when picking out the ideal foundation for your skin. There are tons of different options out there that are formulated for specific types of skin. You need to consider your skin type and your skin tone before grabbing the first foundation that looks close to your skin color on the shelf. With the right foundation, you can get away with wearing practically no makeup. Here are all of the things you need to consider before picking out your foundation.

What is Your Skin Type?

What is your skin type? Do you have normal, dry, oily, or combination skin? To determine what type of skin you have you will need to consider how oily your skin is and where it’s most oily. If your skin never seems to be oily or dry then you have a normal skin type. If your skin tends to be flaky and parched, you have a dry skin type. Oily skin can feel slick or oily all over. Some people have oily patches in some areas, and dry skin in others. This is known as combination skin. It usually is dry on the cheeks and jowls, and just feels oily across the forehead, down the nose and chin. This is called the ‘T-zone’.

If you have a normal skin type you can get away with practically any type of foundation. If you are prone to breakouts or have sensitive skin then avoid liquid foundations and pick out a mineral powder foundation. People with oily or combination skin should always stick with mineral powders. They will give your skin a flawless finish and they will keep your skin from looking greasy.

People with dry skin should opt for liquid foundations that are oil free and contain moisturizing ingredients. You can even add a primer to your skin first to achieve a dewy look.

What is Your Skin Color?

You also need to consider the color of your complexion. Everyone’s skin color has an ‘undertone’; it benefits to learn what yours is. Foundation colors, likewise, have undertones. You should always choose a foundation with undertones that matches your own to complement your skin. If you have pink undertones then you need to choose a foundation with pink undertones. If your skin has more yellow undertones or olive undertones then you will need to choose a foundation with yellow or olive undertones.

Sometimes it can be difficult to match your foundation so you may want to pull up a color chart or ask a professional at a cosmetic counter to match your foundation. You also have the option of having your foundation custom blended to create an exact match. Always make sure that the foundation seamlessly blends into your neck.

What are Your Skin Care Needs?

There are many benefits to wearing certain foundations so you should choose a foundation that suits your personal skincare needs. Some foundations contain anti-aging ingredients that are excellent for maturing skin. Other foundations are specifically formulated for clearing up breakouts which is perfect for acne-prone skin. There are also plenty of foundations on the market that are great for sensitive skin. UV protection should always be a top priority when picking out a foundation for when you’ll be outdoors in the day time, so look for one that offers SPF protection.

You will also need to consider the level of coverage that you need. If you have redness, blemishes, or acne scarring you may want to choose a foundation that offers a little more coverage. Thicker foundations tend to offer a bit more coverage, but make sure that the foundation you choose isn't so thick that it cakes up. If you have minor blemishes or discoloration, a foundation with light or medium coverage is ideal for you.

People with clear complexions may want to skip foundations altogether and choose a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. They still offer some coverage, but they are lighter and much more sheer. If you have a great complexion, you may want to opt for this as feels much fresher and is better for your skin.

What’s Your Budget?

Some foundations can be somewhat costly. Higher end foundations can run upwards of $60 so it is always a good idea to “try before you buy”.

Many cosmetic counters will give out samples that will last you several days. This will allow you to get a good idea of whether or not you like the way the foundation looks or feels. Some drug store brands offer coupons in weekly newspaper flyers. Combine a coupon with a sale, and you can stock up for the year.

You can also go online to try to find beauty sites that offer free samples. If you are really set on trying a certain foundation that is a bit expensive and cannot find anywhere that offers samples make sure that you look into the store's return policy. Most stores will allow you to return opened cosmetics. It is also a good idea to look at reviews online before making your purchase.

Once you find your ideal product, you’ll know how much it costs and can work it into your beauty budget. After all, the right foundation that makes your skin look and feel great is priceless.
