How to Knit a Beanie

Knitting a beanie can be a very easy task for experienced persons but it can be a very challenging task for a novice in the knitting business. A beanie is a cap which keeps your head warm especially during the winter or a rainy day or from getting too cold in general. But, if you think that a beanie only has one style, you are wrong. There are different appearances and construction styles that people employ to create their very own beanie. So, let us learn how to knit a beanie.

A beanie cap is a head-fitting brimless cap without a visor. This is especially used by people to warm or keep their heads from getting too cold because of the weather since a beanie is often times made of yarn. The art of knitting a beanie has become world famous that, in fact, in Alice Springs, Australia beanie knitting is regarded as a regional art. Also, Alice Springs, Australia is said to be the Beanie Knitting Capital of the World.

In the early 20th century, a beanie often looks like a cap made from four or six felt panels which are sewn together to form a dome-like tube. The panels may be of different colors of the liking of the beanie knitter or of the person wearing it. Students during those times even wore beanies with their school colors in order to parade and boast their team spirit during sports matches. Today’s beanies however, can be made using knitting techniques and can be made of only one color. Usually, the beanie is made from wool or yarn and when it is done, the bottom part is flipped over in order to form a band at the bottom part of the beanie. And, what we will be doing is a beanie employing a yard and knitting techniques. So, it is time to get started.

Things you will need:

·         Bulky yarn of about 125 yards

·         Sized 10.5 circular needles

·         Double point needles

Instructions:

Step 1: Pick a great knitting pattern of your liking. There are many patterns available for you to use, so pick the one you are most confident that you can follow. However, this is a great knitting pattern for a beanie: Cast 70 sts using the circular needle.

Step 2: Use K1, P1 knitting stitches and repeat until the end or row. Repeat for 3 rows.

Step 3: Watch until the hat measures a good 5.5 inches from the cast edge and K every round.

Step 4: Start to decrease K2 k2tog. Do this until you reach the end of the row.

Step 5: K2 k2tog. Knit about 5 rows with this.

Step 6: Knit 3 more rows using K1, k2tog until the end of rows.

Step 6: Knit 2 more rows using K2tog and repeat until you reach the end of the row.

All you need to do to impressively knit a beanie is practice; they say practice makes perfect.
