How to Lay Flagstone
Nowadays flagstone is the mostly preferred stone (or material) for laying pathways, patios and backyards. It is defined as a “versatile sedimentary stone”. Flagstone offers variant designer solutions as it varies in color (including shades and tones), size, and shape. You may also combine flagstones of different colors, sizes, and shapes. If needed, it can be cut. However, as flagstone is rather heavy it would be almost necessary to have an assistant when laying flagstone yourself. The article provides instructions on how to lay flagstone both with or without cement. If you live in a warm climate you may not need cement. However, cement prevents the base foundation from sinking and going loose.
Instructions
Preparation:
Step 1. First of all scheme out the layout of the level and flat place you want to cover with flagstones. If it is not level enough, remove excess soil. Then measure area to know how much flagstones will be required. When you have made up your mind on the flagstone color, size and shape prepare those. You should know that regular flagstones would convey a more official look, whereas, irregular – a vintage one.
Step 2. With the help of the district electrician mark all underground wiring spots. Use stakes or spray paint for it.
Step 3. Before the actual laying of the flagstones check how well they will fit together and on the area. This will be especially useful if your flagstones have irregular shapes. When you have laid the flagstones in proper way number them accordingly (do not use permanent paint) so that you will at once lay them this way again.
Base Preparation
Step 1. Make a 4-5″ excavation of the whole area intended for laying flagstone. With a carpenter's level make sure the base surface is even. If too wet the ground add crushed gravel before adding a 2″ layer of sand. Either with plate compactor or hand tamper pack the base.
Flagstone laying
Step 1. Begin with one corner and gradually proceed with the numbered flagstones. You will need now a chisel and hammer.
Step 2. Fill gaps between the flagstones with sand. To level stones tap with hammer where required.
Step 3. When done with it check the spot with a level and make corrections where needed.
Step 4. Add some more sand over the flagstone area and sweep into the remaining gaps. Sprinkle the surface with water to let the sand and flagstones “sit”. You can walk on it after 24 have passed.
Laying Flagstone on Cement
Step 1. Power wash and let dry completely the concrete intended for the flagstones.
Step 2. As per the package instructions, prepare the thin-set mortar (instructions may vary).
Step 3. Apply 0.25 – 0.5″ of mortar to flagstone side intended to lay on the cement. Position the flagstone; press a little.
Step 4. Lay flagstones leaving small gaps in between.
Step 5. When all flagstones are laid on cement let the mortar dry for the next 24 hours.
Step 6. Combine powdered color additive with grout (if used), add grout in the gaps. Use the trowel to smooth it.
Step 7. Remove the waste grout with a wt cloth. Leave for 24 to dry.
Now you are equipped with basic instructions on how to lay flagstones.

Nice hub. We've got to replace our deck and were thinking of pouring a concrete patio, but now you've got me thinking flagstones would look a lot nicer. Any idea how they compare in price to concrete?
